Our Mission

The challenge

Togo is one of the poorest countries in the world, and many of its young people are damaged and vulnerable. They don’t get the chance of an education and learn a profession as they often come from families that lack the means to send their children to school, and struggle to keep a roof over their heads. From a young age, these children have to work to contribute to the family income.

The solution

“The place where disadvantaged and damaged young people find a safe home”

At De Thuishaven we believe in strength of the community. Together we provide a stress-free home where young people can develop their skills and learn a profession at their own pace. We collaborate with local people from the villages where we set up our projects. For a modest salary they guide the youths in learning within the various ‘apprenticeship programs’ which we develop together.

The strength of De Thuishaven

Our biggest strength is our support base. At De Thuishaven we welcome everyone. It doesn’t matter where you are from, what religion you follow, or what your political preference is. De Thuishaven can count on its core of supporters that are connected through a shared love for humanity.

How we bring about change

At De Thuishaven we value the importance of education and a roof over your head. We currently offer 15 students both theoretical and practical education, and give them a roof over their head. Our students learn English, French, topography, mathematics and get physical education. We’ve developed five programs for students to learn a craft:

  • Making clothes in a workshop
  • Bakery / Hospitality
  • Agriculture
  • Woodworking
  • Hairdresser
  • Shoemaking

When a mentor decides that a student is ready to start working as a professional, the student will receive an apprenticeship certificate. If the student wishes to start up their own business, we look to our sponsors for support by means of microcredit.

Our Impact

We currently offer an apprenticeship to 15 students in Togoville.
